How to Plan a Birthday Party for Seniors
Planning for your senior loved one’s birthday party is quite stressing and thrilling, especially when you have no idea what to do. However, celebrating this milestone with your senior loved ones is vital for their longevity — it makes them feel loved, special and honored.
Here are some ideas on how to plan a birthday party for your senior loved ones.
1. Involve your senior loved ones in the planning.
Although, throwing a surprise party is a good idea, but sometimes having a surprise party for your senior loved ones doesn’t work all the time. So, involve your senior loved ones in the planning and get your calendar. Choose a date when you and your senior loved ones are free or do it during the weekend. Remember, their opinion is important to accomplish a fun and perfect birthday party for them — set the time, number of a guest list, and party theme; and have fun with your ideas.
2. Choose the party location.
Some seniors may prefer to celebrate their birthdays at home so, ask them if they want to go out on their birthday or stay in. Thus, if they decided to go out on their birthday, make sure that their party venue is accessible to them. Call or visit the venue for reservation, look for party decorations and picture out your party ideas.
3. Decide on the party menu.
Decide if you will have a home-cooked meal, delivery or take out food at the party. Preparing foods for a party is a huge task, so plan ahead and make a list of your party menu. List all the ingredients that you will need, search for some new recipes and do the grocery shopping. Cook a hearty and healthy meal for your senior loved ones and ask if they want anything for the occasion. However, if you and your loved ones decided to host a simple dinner at home — arrange your dining area with colorful plates, kitchen towels and make them comfortable by having a pillow in their seating area.
4. Bake or order a birthday cake.
No matter what your age, blowing a birthday candle is always fun. Therefore, order a birthday cake or bake together with your senior loved ones. Baking is a therapeutic activity and a great way to spend time together.
5. Buy a birthday gift for them.
In spite of the fact that our senior loved one may have everything they need, giving them a gift on their birthday will remind them they are loved. So, surprise them with gifts such as jewelry, apparel, gift cards, and books or give them a birthday card or notes wishing them to have a long life or expressing how much you are grateful to have them in your lives.
Keep in mind that some seniors may like to have an intimate celebration with their family rather than having a big party or they have plans during their birthday to do some activities such as dining in a restaurant, doing some shopping, watching movies or volunteering in their community. So, whatever your senior loved ones are planning for their birthday — support them and have fun with them.
